Understanding barcode design and functionality

Barcode labels are widely used nowadays to label various products. These labels are basically tags which have encoded data stored in them. They are used so that retailers and consumers can identify and list various inventory items with ease. This proves useful for large businesses that have a vast number of goods in stock.

These particular tags can be distinguished by the type of base materials used in them. At present, labels are available with a number of different types of adhesive backings. Organisations can also order tags in different customised shapes and sizes.

Barcode labels are made of vinyl, paper, plastic or metal. These materials are then attached to an item’s surface via the use of an adhesive under the surface. Line bars is one of the methods that is used for numeral data encoding on the tags. Several vertical lines of varying thicknesses are used to encode data with the use of a barcode program. The information is further encoded by varying the number, the spaces between the lines and the thickness of the vertical lines. The second technique incorporated is a 2-dimensional patterning of dots of varying thickness paced on a square or a rectangular frame.

Such barcode labels are designed with special computer software. The information imprinted on the tags might include several sizes, data fields along with colours on the basis of the requirements of the orders being placed. This data can be decoded only with the help of a special reader.
