Difference between asset tags and barcode labels

Barcode labels fall into a broad category that includes numerous products which we seem to see everywhere. They fit in to the heavyweight class and pack a punch depending on their sheer market presence. On the other hand, asset tagging is a specialised application that sometimes coincides with the barcode label category.

Bar codes are a machine-readable, fast and error-free means of communicating data. Barcode symbols translate into an alphanumeric data set or the content is located from a database, making the label simply a means of support between the subject and the data.

Barcode labels are frequently used to:

• Track containers, pallets, envelopes, and parcels
• Organise shelf, floor and rack inventories in warehouses
• Systematise folders and files in the workplace
• Accelerate sales of commercial and retail products

Usually, asset tagging is restricted to expensive property such as medical equipment, vehicles or fixed machinery that must be tracked or secured with the help of an asset management system.

Often, companies employ asset tagging to access a wealth of data about the property. The data related to an asset may include the following details about it:

• Name
• Location
• Description
• Condition
• Service and warranty records
• Annual depreciation figures
• Date of purchase
• Owner of the asset

So, if you want to take proper care of your valuables, asset tagging or barcode labelling can be very helpful.
